The school year has finally wound down and the students are about to finally breathe that fresh, assignment free air.

I can't wait.

It has been a long year for Thunderbird athletics and I certainly feel for them.

New coaches and a new sports editor seemed to go hand in hand at the beginning.

I was learning how to catch up with the athletic department and manage a section while these coaches tried to take control of the Thunderbird destiny and give their athletes something to be proud of.

The football team was loaded with potential coming off of a victory at the Valley of the Sun Bowl and a team of excelling athletes, but bad luck and a lack of focus at the end of games took every win they could have had away.

The most exciting thing on campus this year, at least for me, was the women's basketball team.

Coach Kori Stephenson led her team to the No. 1 seed in the conference.

The previous year, she took a virtually unknown, unexpected team through regional's to the championship.

With the team she assembled this season, it seemed like the championship was in the bag before the season ended.

The playoffs were not kind though, and losing in the first round at home was crushing.

The men's basketball team made up for it that very night by overcoming an eight point deficit with less than a minute remaining.

But now it's all over.

It's been a fun one, but I know MCC will only continue to grow academically and athletically and the years will just keep getting better.

Go Thunderbirds!
