A new club is coming to the MCC campus, thanks to art student Alex Sandoval.

The Art Entrepreneurs Club will fill a need art students have had since the term 'starving artist' became a part of the college vocabulary.

Sandoval began the process of putting the club together last semester, and now it is becoming a reality.

"A lot of students signed up last semester, but because of the slow process, many of those students are no longer at MCC, so I have to get new signatures," Sandoval said.

25 students are required in order to form a club. Those interested in starting a club must put together a constitution, explain what the club is going to be about and gather signatures.

"Most of them are quiet, they don't talk a lot. They live in this world of imagination; they don't understand what the business world is like. I want to help other people to understand," said Sandoval when speaking about art students.

Sandoval has had some hands on training in the business world. He worked as a salesman at a small Phoenix advertising agency.

"The guy I worked for was really cool. He had a degree in marketing. I was the only salesperson there at the time and I got a lot of one-on-one training and I learned a lot from him," he said.

Going forward, Sandoval has big plans for the club.

"I would like to get together with the ASU business club and they are interested in the art market," Sandoval said.

Gingher Leyendecker, life drawing and anatomy teacher at MCC, will be the faculty advisor for the club.

"I think it's interesting because it's not just an art club, but more of a networking club where they might find outlets for selling their work, and getting exposure," Leyendecker said.

"I do commissioned pieces and shows, so I have a little to offer them such as how to get into shows, how to price their work," Leyendecker added.

One art student, Nikelle Mackey, also thinks it's a good idea.

"They have a math club, other clubs, but no art club. I think it's a good addition to the community college," Mackey said.

"I think it would be a great opportunity for any artist to take part in and to learn. Anybody who's really into art should join the club," said art student Karen Montano.
