Studies show that waring flip flops year-round can cause long-term health problems.

With the winter weather fast approaching, fashionista's everywhere are salivating at the idea of scarves, coats and especially boots.

Well, almost everywhere. In Arizona, where winter is practically non-existent, it's strictly flip flops all year long for many.

Look around and see that these summer vacation shoes have left the beach to become everyday footwear.

Who wouldn't love them? They are comfortable, easy to slip on, require no socks and are relatively cheap compared to tennis shoes.

But don't let that be deceiving. Flip flops may seem like they offer the feet a rest from shoe jail and confining tennis shoes, but ultimately they are doing more harm than help.

Dr. Mark D. Forman, a Scottsdale Podiatrist, said, "After high heels, flip flops are the second worst shoe you could wear."

Forman explained that flip flops offer no support and that the forefoot does more work than the rear-foot and this imbalance can lead to injuries.

While flip flops at places like the beach or pool are completely appropriate attire, they were never designed for everyday use.

"Wearing flip flops are worse than going barefoot," said Forman.

Overuse of flip flops can cause long-term heel pain, arch pain, as well as pain in the knees, hips, and back.

They can also cause bunions, pronation, tendinitis, shin splints or even a sprained ankle.

"I see about five to ten patients a week with flip flop related problems," Forman said.

However, all hope is not lost.

There are companies out there such as Chaco's, Wolky's Serenity and Mozskito that offer more foot-friendly flip flops.

Flip flops that hold the American Podiatric Medical Association's Seal of Acceptance offer more support to the foot but Forman still strongly recommends that people leave flip flops behind and wear comfortable running shoes or sandals with a back like Crocs.
