The Mesa Community College Lady Thunderbirds softball team met up with the Arizona State University Sun Devils in the second of only two games played by MCC against a university in any sport. The Sun Devils were the 2008 PAC-10 and National Champions and their play proved it.
Stepping on to the football field, defensive lineman Sefita Vaki stands at 6 foot 3 inches 280 pounds, a size which speaks for itself. Vaki, a freshman at MCC has developed into a steady talent and playmaker on defense for the T-birds. Graduating from Highland High School, Vaki was forced to overcome trials that nearly interrupted his education.
Mesa Community College hosted the New Mexico Military Institute for a homecoming game that was set up to be a good one. Coming into the game with a record of one win and seven losses, Mesa was in a must win situation. # 54 Tui Ofalhulu was seen on the sidelines holding a shovel.
The women's basketball team played Luke Air Force Base the day of homecoming. Gritty defense, down the stretch, was the key to the 82-65 victory. The T-birds held a ten point lead at halftime, but Luke AFB made a surge midway through the second half. The lady T-birds came together and played aggresive defense down the stretch though, forcing a couple of key turnovers.
What more can you ask for at halftime but to sit back and enjoy the entertaining dance put on by male cheerleaders, and the powder puff football game between the staff and students of MCC. During an exciting T-bird homecoming, the fans cheered for more than just their T-bird football players.
